How does middle/high school work, what's it like and what's the difference between the two? I really need some help! (I know this is a weird question but I was homeschooled most of my life so I have no idea how middle/high school work and what's it like.)
No problem!
How to Write About Middle School/High Schools

Middle school and high school are key times within a child’s life.
Gone are the days where they only had one teacher to tell them everything; now they have to change classes and have harder content that they have to study.
There’s more friend drama now that they’re all developing their own identities and their sense of who’s a good person and who’s not, and along with that comes astronomical stress compared to their elementary school years.
There’s also puberty, which sucks, and the beginnings of serious extracurricular activities that require a lot of time and dedication.
*This may vary from school to school*
Middle school = Grades 6-8 (Kids 11 to 13)
High school = Grades 9-12 (Kids 14 to 18)
Since many people have no idea how to write about schools, whether they be homeschooled or have graduated a while ago, here’s a few tips on how to write middle school and high school.
Just a note that I’m going to be describing public schools and not private schools, Also, schools are going to be different across the country; I’m a New Yorker, and my school knowledge and experience can be way different than those of someone who went to school in the south or in the midwest.
**IMPORTANT NOTICE!**
“High school” and “middle school” are not capitalized! Only capitalize it when you’re saying the name of the school. (Example: Eldridge Middle School)
1. Know What Grades Take Which Courses (AKA Know All the Technical Stuff)
Nothing demonstrates complete lack of knowledge about the school system than not knowing the basic technical side of it, such as which grades take which classes. Aside from various exceptions, an eighth grader isn’t going to be taking Physics and a twelfth grader isn’t going to be taking Biology.
Here’s the list of the core classes in middle school and high school:
English
Math
Science
Social Studies
Foreign Language
These classes are going to be the hardest and the ones that the students stress out the most about.
Grade 6
- English
Read things like The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and Tuck Everlasting
- Math
Multiplication and division
Decimals
- Science
Basic physics…like, very, very, very basic. Also a bit of chemistry.
-Social Studies
Ancient history
Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia, China, India, Renaissance, etc.
- Foreign Language
In my school, we didn’t start a foreign language until seventh grade.
This year is very stressful because it’s the transition from elementary to middle school. They now have things like detention and multiple teachers and changing classes.
Grade 7
- English
Reading books like My Fair Lady, The Miracle Worker, The Pearl, etc.
- Math
Starting to work with “x.”
Percents, statistics, basic algebra.
- Science
Basic biology
- Social Studies
Beginnings of US history. From the Native Americans to the Industrial Revolution.
- Foreign Language
Very basic facts
How to say hi, describe yourself, furniture, food, activities, ask questions, etc.
This is a pretty chill year. You’re all adjusted from last year and have more stable friendships.
Grade 8
-English
Reading books like Call of the Wild, The Outsiders, the White Mountains.
Starting to get into Shakespeare
More in-depth analysis
-Math
Algebra
Equations, find x, etc.
-Science
Earth Science
Rocks, weather, space, etc.
-Social Studies
End of US history, from the Industrial Revolution to present day
-Foreign Language
Developing the basics learned in seventh grade.
This year can be hard because students start taking more difficult, high-school level classes.
Grade 9
- English
Reading books like To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, Great Expectations, and Romeo and Juliet
Introduction to research papers
- Math
Geometry
Learning about shapes and how to find the area and sides
Most useless math there is unless you want to build things
- Science
Biology
Learning about living things, cells, ecosystems, etc.
- Social Studies
Global History
Beginning of the world to the Renaissance
- Foreign Language
More complex sentence structure. Learn different tenses other than the present tense.
Yikes! This year is incredibly hard; high school is so much more difficult than middle school! There’s an open campus and a lot more freedom, but there’s also a lot more room for error. The first year where the grades start actually counting.
Grade 10
- English
Reading books like Macbeth, The Picture of Dorian Gray, The Canterbury Tales, Beowulf, and Animal Farm.
- Math
Trigonometry/Algebra II
Very difficult Algebra and Trigonometry
- Science
Chemistry
Learning about molecules, elements, formulas, and reactions.
This is the science with the periodic table and mixing stuff that blows up.
- Social Studies
Global History
The Renaissance to present day
- Foreign Language
Learning new tenses other than Past, Present, and Future (Ex: Imperfect, Conditional)
This year is okay. Mostly spent worrying about Junior year.
Grade 11
- English
Reading books like Hamlet, The Great Gatsby, and Farenheit 451
- Math
Pre-Calculus
Yikes
- Science
Physics
Also Yikes
Learn the science of movement
- Social Studies
Complete US History
Advanced Placement US History is abbreviated to APUSH (pronounced ay-push)
- Foreign Language
Same class but hard now
This year is very stressful because it’s the year that counts the most; colleges look mostly at the grades from this year.
Everyone is freaking out and taking AP and SAT and ACT prep classes. A shit-show in its purest form.
Grade 12
- English
Read books like Othello, The Crucible, and The Scarlett Letter
Senior paper
- Math
Calculus
YIIIIIIIIKKKKKEEEEESS
College course
- Science
AP Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Science
Students must choose one or the other or an elective science like Marine Biology or Anatomy
- Social Studies
Government and Economics
Two courses that are each only a semester long. You either take one class for the first semester and switch to the other class second semester or switch the classes every other day
- Foreign Language
Nobody even cares anymore
This year is the most fun year of high school; although some colleges do still look at the grades, many students are already committed to college and get a case of “Senioritis” which is when they let their grades slip and take it easy because they don’t have to worry about impressing colleges.
OKAY THAT TOOK A LOT MORE TIME THAN IT SHOULD’VE
2. Know the Types of Classes
Depending on their skill level in the area, kids can take a variety of different versions of these core classes. There’s reagents classes, honors classes, and advanced placement (AP) classes.
At least in New York, reagents classes take state-made reagents at the end of the year as a final exam.
Honors classes are basically advanced versions of reagents classes. They teach at a faster pace and go more in-depth into the topics. They, too, take reagents at the end of the year.
AP classes are the hardest of them all. They’re college-level classes and make students eligible to take the AP test. Depending on what score they get on the AP (1-5), they can skip the 101 classes in college.
(Example: If a girl gets a 4 on the Global History AP, she can skip Global History 101 in college)
Junior year is also the year students take the SAT and ACT, huge tests that are very important for college.
Other schools may have other kinds of classes like IB, but this whole list is JUST ACCORDING TO MY EXPERIENCES.
3. Just Know that School Is Not the Worst Place on Earth
Although there are certain times when school can be the absolute worst thing ever and there are a lot of flaws in the education system, it’s not all downsides!
School is a place where you learn new things, meet new friends, and get to hang out with people you wouldn’t hang out with otherwise.
There are extracurricular activities available for FREE that you can join, and aside from being academic, school sponsors a very nice social climate that is crucial for kids to develop skills in communication and interaction with others.
Of course, high school is also the place where people start getting into serious relationships, which you can research here.
I really hope this helped!

10 Useful Tips to Prepare for the Digital SAT
Introduction
The new SAT is here, and it's a bit different than the previous version. It's also more difficult than ever to get an exceptional score on this test—but if you know what to expect and how to succeed, it can be done! Below are 10 tips that will help you prepare for the digital SAT as best as possible.

How to Prepare for Digital SAT in 10 Easy Steps:
1. Know the Exam Structure
The SAT is a computer-based test. It consists of two test sections: Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.
The Math section is 60 minutes long, while the Reading section lasts 65 minutes; both are divided into multiple parts that you must answer in succession within their allotted time frame. The Writing section lasts 25 minutes, but it's not divided into separate parts like the other sections are--you'll have to finish your essay in one sitting!
2. Take a Practice Test
Taking a mock test is one of the finest ways to prepare for the SAT. The best way to do this is under real conditions, so make sure you use a timer and calculator if you have them available.
3. Use the Official Guide
The official guide is the best source of information about the new digital SAT. It contains practice tests, so you can see what the test will look like and how it works.
The College Board has released an updated version of its flagship exam book for 2019--and it's packed with everything you need to know before taking your first official test on Saturday, May 4th!
4. Practice Using Your Calculator
Use a calculator that is similar to the one you will use on test day.
Practice using the calculator in different ways.
Practice using the calculator in different modes.
Practice using the calculator with different types of problems: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; fractions; exponents and roots; powers and roots; polynomials (polynomial addition/subtraction); logarithms (log base 10); trigonometry (sine/cosine).
5. Learn the New Math Topics You'll Encounter on the SAT.
The new SAT Math section is a lot like the old one, but with some key differences. Here are the main topics you'll want to know:
Arithmetic and Number Properties (30%)
Algebra (25%)
Geometry (20%)
Data Analysis & Probability (15%)
[Read More: Tips To Score 800 On SAT Math Section]
6. Familiarize Yourself with the New Reading Question Types.
The main idea of a passage is the general idea that the author wants you to take away from reading it.
Tone is how an author sounds when writing about their subject, or what kind of attitude they have toward their topic.
Purpose refers to why an author wrote a particular piece--whether it was for entertainment, persuasion, or education;
Perspective refers to where an author is coming from in terms of knowledge or experience;
Point-of-view (POV) refers to whether someone else has written something about your topic and how much authority does that writer have?
7. Use a Timer and Try to Finish Early.
Use the timer on the screen
Try to finish early
Don't spend too much time on any one question, but don't leave questions unanswered. You can always return to them later if you have time.
8. Focus on Improving Your Weak Areas.
When you're preparing for the SAT, it's important to focus on your weak areas. If you are unsure about a topic or concept, consider taking a class in that area or getting extra help from a tutor. It's also helpful to practice with practice tests in the same time frame as the real SAT.
9. Know How to Navigate the New Test Interface.
The new interface is much more user-friendly than the old one. It has a lot of new features that help you focus on the test questions and eliminate distractions, so you can perform your best.
Also, note how easy it is now for students with disabilities or other impairments (such as color blindness) because everything is in black text on white backgrounds!
10. Start Preparing Early!
Start Preparing Early!
Start studying at least 2 months before the test date, and if possible, start even earlier. The more time you spend studying, the better prepared you will be for the SAT.
How to Study Effectively:
Set aside time every day (or at least 3-4 times per week) to study in a quiet place where no one can disturb you.
Pick out topics that are difficult for you and focus on those first; then move on to easier ones later on in your preparation process so that by test day all of your skills have been strengthened equally.
How To Manage Your Time Well: -Study early in the morning when people aren't distracting or interrupting

Conclusion
The SAT is an important test, and you need to be prepared for it. The tips we've shared here are meant to help you get the most out of your SAT experience by making sure that all aspects of your preparation are in order before test day arrives. They may seem like small things, but they can make all the difference!

20 Useful Free Apps For High School (+Junior High & College)(Part 1)
I have tried every single app listed here, for at least a short time. Some of which I use on a regular basis, while others I just tried because I wanted to have twenty different apps on this list, or because there are five choices that do the exact same thing so I only use my favorite. Anyways here we go towards the list of 20, and if any of you are interested in singular reviews on any of these apps, just ask, because I have nothing but time and would be happy to help. Also tell me what you want next. I mean it could be the part two (as one would be easy to make with the amount of apps there are, I've not even really touched the tip of the iceburg), or another certain type of post, whether it be studying tips, a website version of this, or a recommended list of classics to read.
Homework/Studying Apps:
1. Quizlet - A studying app/website with flashcards, games, quizzes, and tests. Useful for learning languages, vocab, and terms, but also has other features such as diagrams. It's one of the mobile studying apps of it's type, though it doesn't have all the features the actual website provide.
2. Cram.com Flashcards - Another studying app like Quizlet, though unlike the mobile version of quizlet it has more games than just match, and just different features and set up.
3. Kahoot - A quiz app focused on the younger audience, as it's played like a game more than studying. You have options between playing live games with a host, a challenge between multiple players, or a single player practice.
4. Khan Academy - A learning app that lets you learn anything it offers for free of charge, there are math courses that range from early math to AP Calculus to Linear Algebra, along with Science, Economics, Arts and Humanities, Test Prep, and more.
5. Photomath - A "camera calculator" that brags to be the smartest one on the market, you can take photos of your math equations or type them in and you will receive the answer and step-by-step instructions on how to get that answer.
6. Duolingo - Probably the best app for learning a language die there being so many choices including English, French, German, Italian, Romanian, Greek, Polish, Swahili, and more. You can learn as many of these languages as you want at once, and there are multiple choices for native languages, so you can learn French even if you're just say fluent in Spanish. There are also groups that you can join in-app.
Planner/Checklist Apps:
7. School Planner - There are multiple on the market, though the one being mentioned is by Andrea Dal Cin. It has tabs for a calendar, an agenda, a timetable, grades, subjects, teachers, attendance, and recordings. That and a complete overview for the day and week.
8. School - This exact application is by Flaring App, and it offers tabs for schedules, homework, handbook (It's actually formulas for math, physics, chemistry, and information about countries), time to end (which is a time table), books, people (sorted into teachers and friends contacts), trigonometry, and notes.
9. Egenda - Another planner/organization type app that has two main tabs, what's due and completed, and then customizable class tabs where you're assignments can be sorted by class.
10. Study Planner - As the name suggests this app is a planner and organization app. It includes side tabs for a dashboard, agenda, calendar, class schedule, study time, subjects, and teachers.
Communication Apps:
11. Remind - A school communication platform that allows you to talk to the class, a group, or an individual. Allows you to be in multiple class's and/or club's groups, it translates messages, and you are also able to share photos and flyers.
Learning/Courses Apps:
12. Coursera - An app filled with online courses in programming, math, music, languages, business, and more from some of the top universities. It seems to be the one with the most courses or at least out of the ones I've found. Ever course I've found so far has been free, though certification usually isn't.
13. Stepik - Another online course app, with free courses, though the amount of courses on this app are very limited with less than a dozen available mostly focusing on coding and English.
14. Edex - Another online course app, with courses offered by top universities, and like Coursera it mostly has free courses with paid certification. It has a good amount of high level STEM classes, business classes, law classes, and architect type classes. It also has high school courses such as introduction to algebra and introduction to geometry, which are both actually currently going on.
15. TubeStudy - Just another course app, although this one you learn through videos, most of which seem to be free. Videos cover a large variety of topics all the way from Chess to Geometry to Python to German.
Etc. Apps:
16. Libby - An app I recommend if you have a library card, as it links to your local libraries ebooks and audiobooks, letting you check them out and then leaving automatically when you time runs out.
17. All Formulas - An app that offers a list of math, Physics, and Chemistry formulas though the list is limited and certain formulas are missing such as the equation of a circle.
18. Math Formulas Pack - Another app that offers a list of math formulas, the set up is a little simpler than the appearance of all formulas, but unlike like it, it only has math formulas. It seems to have more math formulas than the other, though I haven't checked. Also like most realistic apps, it is missing formulas.
19. Career Guide - While not exactly a school app, it has it's relations definetely for those who are trying to see just how many jobs are out there. It's probably one of the best apps I've found out there when it comes to selection and information, though I've found, and had to use, websites that offer a lot more information. 20. Free books and audiobooks - An app that offers free books and audio books, most of the books that they offer are older but many great and well-known classics are there, including works by Jane Austin, Lewis Carroll, and Mark Twain.
